a postmortem

THE BLUE ROOM was originally created for Slice of Jam, a 48hr visual novel game jam.  I was the writer on that team and very proud of what we've accomplished in that short period of time. We had beautiful artwork and incredible tracks, which definitely carried the game.

Unfortunately, though, the game was never fully completed due to the time constraint. However, I didn't want all the work we've done to go to waste; and so, less than a year later, I had time and decided that I wanted to take up learning Ren'py to finish this game. (Thanks to my team, I still had access to all our files.)

As someone who has only used Twine to make games, learning Ren'py was bit of a challenge. Some stuff came easier than others while others were just too difficult to figure out. I was seriously want to thank the Ren'py subreddit and Lemma Soft Forums for being seriously helpful as I struggled, haha.

While art and music stayed the same, I made updates to the script, keeping the core concept and removing honestly clunky dialogue, as well as the GUI since I feel like it didn't fit the aesthetic and that the text itself was bit too hard to read.

BEFORE:

It's just a tad bit of struggle to read, tbh.

AFTER:

I also allowed the player to change the playable character name plus changed the placement of the sprite.

So yeah, I made some changes and learned more about Ren'py. And, honestly, I think I did a good job! If you want to see the old game, here's a link for that. But, I would rather y'all play this game because, well, it's done.
